By
Marsha Jacobs, Event Director We
started off with the first meet of the year on what I thought was a
completely new map, but I later found out that GCO had used a prior
version of the map for a meet more than 10 years ago!
We had better luck this time; last time it poured rain and very
few people showed up, but this year we had beautiful weather. Dwight
Freund provided an extensive update to the map to keep up with all the
construction projects added in the past several years.
Thanks, Dwight! Stew
Hintz set a very interesting 60-minute Score-O course which challenged
even the most advanced of runners. He
made great use of many unique features on the campus while keeping us
amused with the Question/Answer sheet.
Did anyone notice some of the wrong dates were for Elvis
Presley's birthday? Many
thanks to all those who helped at this meet.
Special thanks to Dwight Freund for the super job on the map and
to Stew Hintz for designing the Score-O course and providing us with the
entertaining question/answer selections.
Jennifer Kerr got us the permits and insurance, and Bob Cooley
printed the maps. Dave
Takacs and Jennifer Kerr did both setup and cleanup, and Dave also set
out all the directional signs. Jennifer
also worked Registration while Dave managed Finishes, and Six
new memberships were established at the meet.
I hope those and others who enjoyed themselves will consider
volunteering to assist at one or more of our 2009 meets.
It's fun, you'll learn a lot more about orienteering, and it's
what enables us to provide more meets for all. A
few notes regarding the Question/Answers: 1
- Control #31: the control circle was not at the correct location for
its question. Earlier
competitors attempting to go to #31 who mentioned that problem at the
Finish got credit; anyone starting later was told to skip #31 and was
not scored for that question. 2
- Control #39: if you couldn't find Justin's date on the concrete pad
but told us about it, you still got credit for being there, as the
scratchings in the cement were a bit hard to see. 3
- Control #50: none of the answers was correct!
The correct answer should have been 204.
We gave credit for any answer circled and also those who wrote
the correct answer on their score sheet. Sorry
for the mixups! RESULTS: Scoring
